Purpose: To encourage weekly writing to improve writing skills over the course of the semester. This assignment aims at building your skills in argument research, development, organization and writing. These short papers are designed to help students reflect critically about the weekly reading assignments.
In COMM 2010: Communication Criticism, a required, writing-intensive course for Communication and Media majors, students develop rhetorical arguments through a series of short persuasive essays. To enhance clarity and student confidence, the Short Essay Assignment has been revised using the TILT framework, featuring a decoded prompt, a step-by-step visual guide, and an updated rubric, all designed to clearly communicate the assignment’s purpose, tasks, and criteria before students begin.

Throughout the first six weeks, students engage in case study discussions, peer workshops, and receive iterative feedback to support their writing development. The transparent design and scaffolded support aim to reduce student anxiety, improve time management, and foster skill transferability beyond the course. Below, you’ll find the decoded assignment materials, including the visual walkthrough and rubric, along with strategies for instructors to maximize student understanding and success.
