Kinesiology 4020

In this upper-level undergraduate Kinesiology course, students explore the psychological factors that influence motivation to exercise, moving beyond exercise programming to understand why people do or do not engage in physical activity. Midway through the semester, students complete a motivational climate activity in which they take on the role of a leader (e.g., coach, trainer, therapist) and practice providing both exercise technique feedback and motivational support to peers. This applied classroom exercise builds on prior online learning about motivational climate components.
To prepare students, the instructor uses a TILT-informed, decoded instruction slide deck that clearly outlines each part of the activity, including leader responsibilities, peer roles, and the debriefing process. The decoded format makes the goals and relevance of the assignment explicit, helping students understand how the task builds their ability to foster positive motivational climates in professional settings. Below, you’ll find the decoded assignment materials, which can be adapted by instructors seeking to increase clarity, engagement, and professional relevance in their own teaching.
