Proposing a WI Course
Do you think a course you teach would be ideal to offer as Writing Intensive (WI)? We’d love to help you make that a reality. Since students need to take 4 WI courses as undergraduates, when they have more options to choose from, they are less likely to be delayed at graduation because they are missing a needed WI course. Beyond that, shaping your course through writing can give you a rewarding set of insights into students’ thinking and understanding of course content.
To get started, you should discuss your idea with your unit administrator and any department-level committees that oversee curriculum. Your unit administrator will need to sign-off on the course as it moves through the approval system, so having their support up front will save you time and effort.
Next, you will want to design a course syllabus that demonstrates your commitment to helping students meet the five University Writing Outcomes. To help you do that, we would encourage you to talk to colleagues who already teaching WI courses and to review the materials we have made available to you in our self-paced Canvas-based workshop “WAC: An Introduction”.
Once you are comfortable with the concepts and have a grasp for how you would like integrate writing into your course, you’re reading to start the process in Modern Campus Curriculum (MCC), ECU’s digital platform for course approvals. You will find detailed instructions available on the Writing Across the Curriculum committee’s website. The WAC Committee is part of Faculty Senate and manages approvals of WI courses.
If you are proposing a new course that you want to make WI, you will need to follow the process for creating new courses in MCC and then adding a designation (form W-1). If you are adding WI to a course that already exists and are making no other changes to the course, you will simply complete form W-1 in MCC.
