WAC Academy 2024
The spring 2024 WAC Academy invited ten faculty members from Anthropology, Nursing, Public Health, Chemistry, Kinesiology, Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Business, and Communication to participate in this 6-week, face-to-face workshop. The WAC Academy focuses on three key questions: What is good writing? What is effective writing instruction? and Who says so? Weekly themes focused on six areas of writing pedagogy: writing outcomes, writing to learn, teaching for transfer, responding to student writers, and evaluating student writing.
Rather than being a passive, sit back and listen workshop, the WAC Academy is an engaging and active interdisciplinary experience. For example, as faculty have done in previous semesters, this year’s participants were tasked with Drawing Your Writing Process during Week 1. Even though we may hear people talk about the writing process as a linear, one-two-three kind of thing, this selection of faculty drawings shows there is not a one-size-fits-all way to approach composing. Their products illustrate how writing is a context-based, individualized, often messy, and recursive process. We hope that participants leave the WAC Academy recognizing the complex and dynamic nature of writing and writing instruction.
