Writing Consultations

We offer support at any stage of the writing process, on any type of writing, through 45-minute face-to-face and online appointments with undergraduate and graduate writing consultants Though we offer support developing your text, we do not offer proofreading or editing services; we are, however, excited to facilitate an engaging learning experience.

Face-To-Face Appointments

Get in-person support decoding assignment sheets, brainstorming ideas, organizing content, building transitions between paragraphs and sentences, and learning grammar at either our Joyner or Laupus Library location. Find us on the first floor of the Joyner Library, room 1015. Look for the big glass doors and stuffed giraffe. We are located on the third floor of Laupus Library, room 3508. We are tucked into the [northwest]* corner, but can be found easily by looking for the large UWC banner.

General FAQ

How do I make an appointment? Visit mywconline.com to log in to make an appointment. Be sure to select the appropriate schedule (Joyner, OWL/DE, Laupus). White appointment boxes are open appointment times. This guide will walk you through making an appointment.

How can I make the most out of my appointment? In addition to your paper, we encourage you to attach the assignment instructions, the rubric, and any feedback that you’ve received from your instructor.  We also ask you to leave detailed notes in the appointment form about the kinds of feedback that you’d like and areas where you want feedback.  These materials will help consultants to better understand your assignment and give them a clear idea of where to focus.

I have questions. How can I get in contact with someone? If you call and no one answers the phone, please leave a voicemail. We have access to our voicemail off-campus. Someone will call you back. You can also email us at onlinewriting@ecu.edu. All of our staff (consultants and admin) will be checking this account so you should get a quick response during our open hours.

My professor is requiring me to use the UWC? How will they know I came? When you make your appointment there’s a question asking if you want a copy of the report sent to your professor. Click ‘yes,’ and we will send documentation to your professor.

I made an appointment, but now I can’t make it. What do I do? There are a few ways to cancel your appointment. You can log into WCOnline, open your appointment, and click on the red cancel appointment button at the bottom. Or, you can email or call (leave a voicemail) and we will cancel it for you.

Online FAQ

What happens during an online appointment? Online appointments are similar to face-to-face appointments in a few ways.  Consultants will focus on helping you develop your ideas and ask questions to guide you through the writing process. Like face-to-face appointments, they’re happy to give you strategies for editing your writing, but they won’t edit it for you.

What is an online appointment like? We offer two types of online appointments. An eTutoring appointment is asynchronous. You do not have to be present online for this appointment type. You’ll upload your project and a consultant will add comments to the document which you will receive at the end. A Meet Online appointment is our synchronous option. For this appointment, you’ll log into WConline and click on the ‘join now’ link in your appointment. The online appointment provides a chat box and a white board to upload your paper. This guide will help you access the meet online link.

What is an eTutoring appointment? eTutoring appointments allow you to upload your paper for consultant feedback. You do not need to be logged in for an eTutoring appointment.

What is a Meet Online appointment? Meet Online appointments provide a ‘real time’ chat session with the consultant about your paper. You will need to log in during your appointment time. To log into your chat, open your appointment slot. As shown below, you should see a red link to “Start of Join online/chat consultation.”

What kinds of files can I attach (Word documents, PDFs, Pages)? We ask that you only submit Word documents for review.

What do I do if I’m still revising my paper? Do I have to attach it when I make my appointment? No, you can always log back into your appointment at a later time to attach your paper.  However, don’t wait too close to your appointment time to upload your assignment.  We suggest uploading all documents 24 hours in advance.
