WAC: Exploring the University Writing Outcomes
As writing teachers across the curriculum, we need to balance a focus on disciplinary goals and content while still helping students become stronger and more effective writers who can meet the ECU University Writing Outcomes (UWOs) by the time they graduate. Sometimes, this charge can feel like an impossible task. This workshop aims to support you as you explore our campus writing outcomes, which are a core expectation of all writing-intensive (WI) courses. In other words, this online workshop helps you answer two major questions: Which UWOs should I focus on in my WI course? and How can I help students become stronger writers now and in the future?
Workshop participants are offered a chance to engage and “unpack” each outcome as they focus on the following key take-aways:
- An in-depth explanation of each outcome, defining key terms and providing key questions to scaffold instructor thinking and planning;
- Featured resources with multimodal tools (documents, visuals, presentations) that can be used for planning and teaching a WI course with the outcomes in mind; and
- A curated list of teaching artifacts from ECU faculty from writing classrooms across campus.
Because this workshop is self-paced, you can sign up anytime by joining the following Canvas course: https://ecu.instructure.com/enroll/GNXWWX
As always, if you have any questions about the University Writing Program or you need specific help with some aspect of teaching or assessing writing in your course, reach out to Dr. Kerri Flinchbaugh (flinchbaughk@ecu.edu), assistant director of the University Writing Program.
