Book Groups
The University Writing Program is excited to host another important book group discussion for faculty, staff, and administrators interested in creating inclusive and supportive spaces for student learning. Our book for fall 2024 explores how our teaching is being impacted by large language models (LLMs) like generative artificial intelligence (AI), probably best known at the moment as Chat-GPT. We invite you to participate in our TEAMs-based discussion group focused on José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson’s exciting new book Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning (AACU/Johns Hopkins, 2024).
This fall’s book group will be hosted by Professor Michelle Eble of ECU’s English Department and is part of a year-long set of workshops and seminars devoted to exploring the role of generative Artificial Intelligence in higher education teaching and learning sponsored by the Office of Faculty Excellence.
From the publisher’s website:

Its integration into classrooms and workplaces is already underway, impacting and challenging ideas about creativity, authorship, and education. In this groundbreaking and practical guide, teachers will discover how to harness and manage AI as a powerful teaching tool. José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson present emerging and powerful research on the seismic changes AI is already creating in schools and the workplace, providing invaluable insights into what AI can accomplish in the classroom and beyond. By learning how to use new AI tools and resources, educators will gain the confidence to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities presented by AI. From interactive learning techniques to advanced assignment and assessment strategies, this comprehensive guide offers practical suggestions for integrating AI effectively into teaching and learning environments. Bowen and Watson tackle crucial questions related to academic integrity, cheating, and other emerging issues.”
Reviewers Write:
“Teaching with AI is a short, very practical book that I found engaging and useful as a professor. The authors work hard to calm us down a bit, noting that we are already using AI extensively — from the predictions that Netflix makes for us based on our viewing history, to the products Amazon recommends for us based on past purchases, to the chatbots that help us when we purchase our airline tickets.”
– Marybeth Gasman, Forbes
“While some may fear AI as a threat to traditional education, Teaching with AI offers a compelling perspective. It paints a picture of a future where AI acts not as a replacement for educators, but as a powerful tool to enhance the learning experience and empower both students and teachers. The key lies in approaching this technology with a spirit of innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to ethical implementation.”
– Types Digital, Medium
“This book is a veritable lifeline to those of us navigating the turbulent waters of AI in the postsecondary classroom, provided we are willing to take seriously the need to revisit our assumptions about both what constitutes learning as well as the value and purpose of college teaching.”
– Kate Drezek McConnell, American Association of Colleges and Universities
