Should we have an intro sentence here?

An Introduction to WAC at ECU

This multimodal professional development seeks to answer the question, What is required of me as an instructor of a WI course at ECU?

  • What do I need to know, plan for, expect, ask of students, assign, reflect on in order to improve as a writing teacher…?
  • How can the UWP and UWC support you and your student writers?
  • How can I help students practice and master the UWO and improve as writers?

It provides opportunities to:

  • Get expert-feedback on the activities that participants engage in throughout
  • Collaborate (synchronous and asynchronous) with the UWP and others on course materials, strategies to improve the teaching of writing.
  • Individualized feedback and discussion

You could think of it as guide for thinking through the foundational aspects of teaching a WI course.

  • Specific tools, strategies, and resources you can easily integrate into your course preparation and instruction
  • Unpacking of UWOs, including
    • Questions central to the pedagogy and process of thinking through each outcome;
    • Multimodal tools (documents, videos, visuals, presentations…) that can be used in writing classrooms across the curriculum to support student mastery of each outcome;
    • Heuristics and curriculum mapping tools to assist your planning;
    • Curated examples of how other writing instructors from across the curriculum support student mastery of each outcome;

Are you already familiar with WAC at ECU? We have included new resources and activities for those who are familiar with the basics. We hope this module can be a nice ‘refresh’ and an opportunity to ‘level up’ in any areas you want to improve in your writing classroom. (And you may even see one of your own teaching artifacts!)

Teaching Writing Across the Curriculum Online in 8 Weeks

This Canvas-based module provides an overview of ECU-specific expectations for Writing Intensive courses. Focusing on practical application, it is organized in three sections to help you think through important questions like:

  • What is Writing Across the Curriculum? What is Writing Intensive?
  • What are the University Writing Outcomes? How can I help my students practice and master them?
  • How can the University Writing Center support you and your students?

If you are interested in participating in one or both of our available Canvas courses, please contact the Writing Across the Curriculum director, Dr. Kerri Flinchbaugh, at flinchbaughk@ecu.edu for more information on the next available session.
